HUD Updates

Destiny 2 | UI Visual Design

Much of my time on Destiny 2 has been spent on the HUD, adding to the UI when brand new features come in, or when systems need to be updated and refreshed.

While there's some range in how much of a visual overhaul these projects were to the UI, they're gathered here because of their shared home on the HUD, or heads up display UI for when players are fully immersed in the gameplay.

Ablative Armored enemies have a unique nameplate to telegraph their unique shields.
I'm always striving to design UI that has centers accessibility!
Especially in my work on Destiny 2, because video games are for everyone!
The chip in the meter on its far right is a nod to the gameplay mechanic; players have to chip away at the shield through rapid damage.
Here, I took the old enemy nameplates and made the white shield lines thicker, with a translucent background as they deplete for more visual contrast.

Buffs Rework

With over 500+ buffs stacked into one channel that could only ever display four at a time, I got to be a part of the UI overhaul that built out two additional channels, and revamped the icons for quicker recognition.

Transcendence Meter

Meter.mp4
A new subclass, Prismatic, comes to Destiny, and with it a need to update the ability tray!
Inflicting both light and darkness damage allows for players to wield a unique grenade in the  transcendence state.
The new meters on the HUD help players keep track of their progress.

Damage Numbers

Enemies have certain resistances to some types of damage players inflict.
Adding red numbers to damage that is resisted helps players better see that their damage isn't optimal. This communication clarity aids for better gameplay!

Glaive Reticle

Glaives were a brand new weapon archetype to Destiny 2, and needed a new reticle.
Glaive gameplay revolves around melee combat. Get enough close range damage in, and players get a little bonus power. The reticle involves a combination of a crosshair and meter, so players can see their progress!
